When tooth loss results in gaps opening between otherwise healthy teeth, a dental bridge is often the right prosthodontic solution to restore that perfect smile. Beyond the aesthetic effect, bridges also keep other teeth from gradually shifting into empty spaces and becoming crooked. This, in turn, prevents difficulties in chewing and speech patterns from developing. Bridges are typically used in conjunction with other permanent dental fixtures such as crowns or implants.
Like their architectural namesakes, dental bridges come in various shapes and sizes. Depending on the condition of your teeth and gums, you might need a traditionally fixed or an implant-supported bridge. Made of ceramics, metal, or a combination of the two, a bridge spans the gap before being anchored to the supporting abutment on each side, where it is cemented in place. Post-installation, your dental professional will inform you of the necessary cleaning and maintenance procedures.
