A dental crown, also known as a dental cap, is an artificial covering fitted over a damaged or decayed tooth. Typically made of ceramics, porcelain, or metal alloy, it is designed to restore the tooth’s original functionality and appearance. It must look and feel natural in your mouth, fitting flawlessly between the adjacent teeth.
A crown is designed with aesthetics and functionality in mind, based on either a mold or digital scan. The tooth is prepared for crown placement typically by removing all the decayed matter around its healthy core. While waiting for it to be made, you are fitted with a temporary cap – a makeshift cover usually worn for about a week. When the permanent crown is ready, we call you in for a fitting. It’s cemented into place only once you’re happy with how it looks and feels.
